New Bar in Town: The Night Rider - Downtown Raleigh

Posted by Raleigh Nightlife Staff • Nightlife News

Just yesterday morning I popped by the new Cold off the Press location on South Street to pick up some tasty cold-pressed juice and noticed some light signage in the neighboring windows. I did a tiny little bit of investigating and found their neighbors to be none other than the relatively new bar dubbed "The Night Rider".

Owned by the same folks behind Ruby Deluxe and the upstairs small music venue known as "The Wicked Witch", this edge-of-Downtown-Raleigh spot is open from 5 p.m. until 2 a.m. daily so it wasn't open at the time of my visit.

Here's what I gleaned from the social medias, though: they have a patio that they share with their cool neighbors (tats and juice, anyone?), they've got some fancy champs (solid choice for what will likely be classified as a "dive bar"), and they even serve your favorite frozen snacks as munchies.

Since I'm naturally curious about all things DTR, especially those happening so close to my office, I'll be stopping in one day soon to check this spot out myself. Stay tuned, y'all - I'll gladly report back!

Coming Soon: Oak City Comedy Festival

Posted by Raleigh Nightlife Staff • Upcoming Events

We love a good laugh and are excited to read about this group of local comedians who have teamed up to produce the inaugural Oak City Comedy Festival. Our thanks to co-producers Matt White, Shari Diaz, and Vinny Valdivia for the hot tip!

May 22, 2018, kicks off the five-day event filled with more than 100 local and national comedians to celebrate the art of comedy and the gift of laughter.

Headlining performances include Andrew Schulz (The Brilliant Idiots Podcast, MTV’s Guy Code), Andy Woodhull (Conan, The Tonight Show w/Jimmy Fallon), Mia Jackson (Last Comic Standing, Just For Laughs), Mike Mello (Opened for Russell Peters, Tracy Morgan, & Dave Chappelle), J Bliss (Winner of NC Funniest 2017), Mark Kendall (Alliance Theatre), and North Coast (VH1, The Peoples Improv Theater).

Produced by Shari Diaz, Matt White, and Vinny Valdivia, The Oak City Comedy Festival will take place in Downtown Raleigh and surrounding areas May 22nd to 26th, 2018. Venues like Kings, Imurj, Watts & Ward, The Outpost, Sonorous Road, Comedy Works, Goodnights Comedy Club will house multiple comedy showcases featuring a mix of stand up, improv, and sketch comedy acts, as well as a few comedy open mics throughout the week.

The Oak City Comedy Festival is possible due to a newly thriving comedy scene that has evolved in Raleigh, in which the festival producers are more than active. They are all veteran performers as well as producers of multiple show runs and one-off shows in the Triangle area. Shari Diaz, the Bronx born comedian produces shows through her company, Boogie Down South Productions, bringing her BX style to the south. Matt White and Vinny Valdivia both teach comedy and produce comedy shows at Moonlight Stage Company and Goodnights Comedy Club. They both have a very diverse comedy background. Improv, sketch comedy, and stand up. White has gained notoriety with several comedy contest wins and performing in comedy festivals throughout the county.

They see the festival as another opportunity to give stage time to emerging comics. “The comedy scene in Raleigh is poised to become a go-to for entertainment industry scouts and agents in search of up-and-coming talent. We want to showcase and celebrate all that Raleigh has to offer" shares co-founder Matt White.
